Palmeiras Crowned Champions for Second Consecutive Year

On Saturday, November 27, 2021, Palmeiras emerged victorious in the 2021 Copa Libertadores final, defeating fellow Brazilian side Flamengo at the Estadio Centenario in Montevideo, Uruguay. The match was a thrilling contest, with Palmeiras ultimately securing a hard-fought 2-1 victory.

Road to the Final

Both Palmeiras and Flamengo had impressive campaigns leading up to the final. Palmeiras, the two-time defending Brazilian Série A champions, progressed through the group stage with four wins and two draws. In the knockout rounds, they eliminated Libertad, Universidad Católica, and Atlético Mineiro.

Flamengo, also a powerhouse in Brazilian football, finished second in the group stage behind Argentinian side Vélez Sarsfield. However, they displayed their quality in the knockout rounds, defeating Olimpia, Defensa y Justicia, and Barcelona SC to reach the final.

Final Showdown

The final encounter between Palmeiras and Flamengo was a closely contested affair from start to finish. Palmeiras drew first blood in the 5th minute through Raphael Veiga, but Flamengo equalized in the 72nd minute with a goal from Gabigol.

As the match entered extra time, Palmeiras seized the initiative and scored the decisive goal in the 95th minute through Deyverson. The victory not only secured Palmeiras their second consecutive Copa Libertadores title but also earned them a place in the 2021 FIFA Club World Cup.
